6 Simple Steps to Silence an Over-Active Mind
1. Get clean.
Water is purifying not only physically but also energetically, hop in the shower or the bath and wash some of that worry away. Splash your face with water or let cold water run on your wrists if you're short on time.
Tidy your space, bring order to the chaos of your external surroundings and your internal landscape will follow suit.
2. Keep away from reels and Google searches.
Any thoughts swirling in your head can only be magnified by Google searches and accurate algorithms, do yourself a favor and put your phone away for at least 20 minutes and longer if possible.
If your having an anxious few days stay off it completely, only check it when its absolutely unavoidable. Call your loved ones once a day instead of only texting. Live your life in the real world, not through the lens of your screen, you'll find your anxiety significantly decreases even within the first day.
3.Take 20 minutes to do something physical and return to your body.
Open a book and get some words of wisdom from people who are wiser than you. Listen to music and bop your head, move and stretch, sketch something. Bake or cook. Do your laundry. Even mundane tasks can be transformation when done mindfully, smell the clean clothes take pleasure in the order of folding and putting away. Allow your mind to attach itself to something real, a task at hand, rather than allowing it to spiral.
4. Write it down.
Find some time, space and a blank piece of paper to write it all down. It doesn't have to be coherent or legible its for you and it's the act of writing that is going to slow your thoughts, the finished product is irrelevant and can be thrown away afterwards or kept in a secure place.
If your creatively inclined or feel inspired by your despair write a poem about it, allow your mind to work towards creating something in the physical world and redistribute the anxious energy out of your mind.
5. Get outside and clear your head.
Is there something you need from the shop an errand you need to run? Even if there's nothing you need, get outside and go for a walk or a drive. I find it works best when I have a clear destination in mind as I feel productive like I am achieving something. Find an excuse to get out of your house and breath the air, let the rain hit you in the face. You'll quickly come back to reality. Anxiety only exists in the mind, turn your attention to your surroundings.
6. Call or meet up with your friends and family.
Talking out loud to someone can make what had grown so big inside you feel minuscule and irrelevant, allow yourself to be reassured, even distracted, ask them about their day if you're not ready to share yours. You don't have to deal with these things alone. We are a tribal species, find solace in your community.
